July is a busy month for undercover photographer, JR. Check out some of his "people sleep" shots from the MELT! Festival that took place in Ferropolis, Germany as well as the piece he collaborated on with Italian muralist, Blu. The mural is included in Berlin's 2007 Planet Prozess exhibition. The exhibition features a group of international artists whose works will transform a Berlin neighborhood into a gallery celebrating street art and will run through August 19th. Kqed says: Lister often works with images of superheroes, but they aren't fighting crimes or saving damsels in distress. They're fallen, tied up or just plain downtrodden and vaguely abstracted, much like our childhood memories. The artist has also included distorted images of recognizable cartoon characters like Mickey Mouse and Toucan Sam in some of his past works as a commentary on societies in which a barrage of media is unavoidable. The majority of the works in the Cracker Got Snapped by the Pops collection don't contain Lister's usual iconography, but they maintain his veiled messages about contemporary culture. New Image Art in Los Angeles is proud to present Sao Paulo based, Brazilian artist Herbert Baglione in his new exhibition titled "The Wall." Baglione has been recognized for over ten years as part of Brazil's street artist's movement along with Os Gemeos, Speto and Vitche whom have all had a large influence on street art here in the United States. Baglione's strong, distinctive style and complex themes visible in his illustrations, paintings, and street endeavors have earned international acclaim in the design and art world alike. Herbert is renowned for his strong simplistic street murals that are reminiscent of Southwest Pueblo cave drawings morphed with extraterrestrial images brilliantly placed on rooftops and street surfaces, only visible in their entirety from an aerial view. His images are of the obese and the painfully anorexic - extremes of human shapes elongated and rounded for the ultimate simplistic, dramatic iconic human symbols. Thus illustrating his interest in human imperfection and extremes. Baglione's art is constantly growing and changing via strong aesthetics and visual language though his figurative subjects remain constant. Baglione relies heavily on a monotone palette of black, white and golden hues. At times Baglione's work has had a strong minimalist and simplistic bent while relying on his elaborate calligraphic language and definite style somewhere between the Art Nouveau images of Audrey Beardsley and the eerie, mystical, and whimsical language of the "children's" illustrator Richard Scarey. For his solo show, titled "The Wall", at New Image Art, Baglione will test the audience to ponder the walls inside contemporary society and to think about their own internal walls that may lead to stagnation in life. "The Wall" is a continuation of Herbert's vision of his highly successful solo show "Vossia" at Fifty24SF Gallery in San Francisco in 2006. This show centered on Herbert's vision of man's consciousness, power and Chaos. Baglione prepares his shows with a deep narrative in each painting. In appropriate fashion, Herbert said, "An artist who stimulates the spectator's pleasure and desire to research his production is most important. Being just aesthetically beautiful is not enough." Herbert was a featured artist in "The Run Up", a film by Upper Playground and exhibited at Fifty24SF, Galerie de Pury & Luxembourg, Zurich, Q! Gallery in Glasgow, and the Von Der Heydt Museum in Wuppertal, Germany among others.

'Stolen' from the Wooster blog: If you're in London, for the last couple of months you may have noticed mysterious gold bars that have been sited in various spots around town. Turns out that they've been placed there by Paul Insect. On Sunday he left a pile of 51 bars on Old Street roundabout, there until last night - gone this morning. Each bar and the pallet they're sitting on are signed by Paul with the line 'if you have me I was stolen'. Herbert Baglione: The Wall July 13 – August 19,2007 Opening Reception: July 13th, 7-10pm New Image Art Gallery in Los Angeles is proud to present Sao Paulo based, Brazilian artist Herbert Baglione in his new exhibition titled “The Wall.” Baglione has been recognized for over ten years as part of Brazil’s street artist’s movement along with Os Gemeos, Speto and Vitche whom have all had a large influence on street art here in the United States. Baglione’s strong, distinctive style and complex themes visible in his illustrations, paintings, and street endeavors have earned international acclaim in the design and art world alike. For his solo show, titled "The Wall”, at New Image Art, Baglione will test the audience to ponder the walls inside contemporary society and to think about their own internal walls that may lead to stagnation in life. “The Wall” is a continuation of Herbert’s vision of his highly successful solo show “Vossia” at Fifty24SF Gallery in San Francisco in 2006. Anthony Lister recently did an interview for Fecal Face. Anthony's works seem like a 27 year old man looking back at his childhood through the fog of the realities learned of society. As we age our childhood no longer has the same pure Saturday morning gleam but instead the comic book characters and Tony the Tigers take on a distorted fogged perspective as the wars of the worlds proceed, our relationships fail, the George Bush's are elected, the environments collapse, our youth and all that made it happy- the simplicity of it is lost and we're only left with a faded obscured memory of a zagged "S" on a blue suit... 1) Are you excited about Transformers the movie? I don't care for some of the character redesigns, but I'll check it when the crowds die down. 2) How often do you go to the zoo? Not nearly often enough. Once a year. 3) Favorite artist of all-time Frank Frazetta 4) The best thing you have bought in the past year? A vacation to Kauai. 5) When did you start drawing the ape/chimp? Started that about 7 years ago and people just latched onto it. 6) Favorite kind of cereal? Honeycomb 7) Black and white or color? Color. 8) If you were not drawing things, what would you be doing? Huffing gasoline... the cheapest grade. 9) Favorite animated character? Old school Warner Brothers... all of 'em. 10) Where do you live and are you going to move? I live in San Francisco and I JUST moved into a new place two months also in SF. 11) Is there was already a Plan A, what's Plan B? Australian artist Anthony Lister will deliver a new series of paintings in an exhibit entitled, "Cracker Got Snapped by the Pops" at FIFTY24SF Gallery. Using nostalgic childhood characters and pop icons, Lister imposes the juxtaposition of these images in seemingly mismatched, harsh surroundings, exposing the ills of street life, addiction and poverty. While his use of soft hues, watercolor and simple pencil-drawn lines are not overpowering to the observer, the overt cynicism of mainstream culture, particularly corporate media bombardment, communicates the artist's message. Lister now resides in New York, and has gained prestige showing works internationally and winning awards such as the Prometheus Art Award and the Metro 5 Art Award. Opening reception: Thursday July 5, 2007 from 7-9:30 p.m.

In the News: Police say a gravedigger stole body parts — including a skull and a thigh bone — from a broken casket at a church cemetery and took them home to make an ashtray. "While he was digging a grave, a casket was broken open, so (investigators) believe he took the body parts to make an ashtray and a pipe," Police Lt.
